Q:

What is our mission?

A:

Our goal with 50 States Apparel is about community. We want to help designers promote where they are from and celebrate their favorite places around the United States.

The idea was born at the end of a vacation. We wanted to get some cool shirts to remind us of the experience we had, but we couldn't find a state shirt that, quite frankly, didn't suck. On the plane ride home, 50 states apparel was created.

Our first goal: Create a marketplace for designers to sell apparel related to places they love and put their state on the map.

Our second goal: Connect consumers with the marketplace to find quality tourism related apparel both online and in their backyard.

How does it work?

A:

Designers submit a design; we produce and market it as well as provide the marketplace to sell it. The site is curated by “congress” to ensure we are offering quality designs in a wide range of styles. At the end of the month, designers get paid. Check out our designer revshare details here.

Each design is associated with a state, but the theme of the design can be for state, city, landmark, event, or anything else related to your favorite places in the United States. Designers can submit as many designs as they like and for as many states as they like. However, we want to encourage unique approaches and avoid “cookie cutter” designs applied to multiple states.

What kind of product will be sold?

A:

Initially we will be launching with t-shirts to make sure we create the best possible experience for designers and customers. Rest assured though, we have some really exciting ideas for expanding the product lines allowing you to create some incredible products. We have to walk before we run. Q:

Do the first people in the community get anything special?

A:

Yes! The first 50 designers to have their shirt on the marketplace will be a part of the “Founding Fathers (and mothers)”. We are planning some special things to say thank you, but we won’t ruin the surprise.

Q:

How much do I make per design?

A:

The profits from the first 5 shirts will go toward production setup costs. After the first 5 shirts, designers will make $6 per shirt sold if they meet the 12 shirt minimum order. We are continuing to work towards making the production process as efficient as possible to maximize profits. We want this to be a great passive income stream for designers and will build it to be as rewarding as possible.

Q:

Who owns the design?

A:

The designer of course! Rights to the design will be maintained by the designer as well as complete control over what is done with the design. Throughout the course of marketing the shirts, we will contact designers individually to discuss options if we uncover unique opportunities for their specific shirt.

Q:

What is the Nifty Fifty™?

A:

The Nifty Fifty™ is a special section of the site made up of the top sold shirt from each state. Apart from a little friendly competition and bragging rights, we hope to be able to do a “special edition” line specifically for these shirts. We will talk more about this as logistics are dialed in.

50 States is the passion project of David P. O’Hara (@davidpohara) and Helpful Human (@helpfulhuman) We are excited to create something awesome for the design community.
